freakysideshowkitty Such a beautiful album. Full of amazing artists. Showcases the talent of the underground scene in the 90’s in Colorado. Many of these artists where ahead of their times. They became popular in other parts of the world.

about

Colorado in the early 1990s was – to put it mildly – not known for its electronic music. Despite being the original home of Wax Trax!, and despite the presence of many talented industrial and electronic musicians, DJs, and producers, the electronic music scene in the Denver-Boulder region could never seem to get signal to break through the high-country, former cowtown, middle-of-the-road background noise.

After many years spent carousing in underground clubs and on the airwaves, I found soon after launching SDS Productions that I was swimming in the middle of a loose-knit group of likeminded rabble-rousers. I realized it would be trivial to pull together a compilation that captured the energy and creativity of this young scene.

While it is difficult to know exactly what impact this little endeavor actually had, there were some distinct successes for some of the participants soon after its release: the following year, Fiction 8, Venus Walk, and Monastery all landed tracks on the legendary Ras Dva quad compilation, "There is no Time"; also in 1995, Fiction 8 signed to European label Discordia and Society Burning joined Re-Constriction Records; a couple of years later, Matt Jones (Neural Fracture) went on to form Backwards Records and his ongoing project Blackcell; Michael Lauter (White Trash Compactor) produced multiple films with soundtracks featuring some of these and similar artists; Nathan Jantz (I:Tek) went on to co-found Obliq Recordings and made significant contributions to the Colorado electronic music scene for years after.

Did Biotech 01 directly influence any of this? To say so would be conjecture, but it is a snapshot of a time that vibrated with a specific energy and did, in fact, put a pin on the electronic music map in the minds of many from as far afield as Japan and Germany. Enjoy this complimentary time capsule for the first time in digital form. - t_kiehne 2022
